How to choose the right workout program

The best workout program is the one you can follow consistently. That said, matching the program structure to your experience level and schedule makes a significant difference in results.

Beginners benefit most from full body training because it maximizes training frequency for each muscle group while keeping total weekly volume manageable. As you become more experienced, split programs like Push/Pull/Legs allow you to accumulate more volume per session without excessive fatigue.

Advanced lifters often do best with Upper/Lower splits or hybrid programs that allow both high frequency and high volume. The most important variable at any level is progressive overload — consistently increasing the challenge over time.

Strength vs hypertrophy training

Strength training uses heavier weights (80–90% of 1RM) for lower reps (1–5) and longer rest periods (3–5 minutes). It primarily develops neuromuscular efficiency — the ability to recruit and coordinate muscle fibers.

Hypertrophy training uses moderate weights (65–80% of 1RM) for higher reps (6–15) with shorter rest periods (60–120 seconds). It drives muscle growth through mechanical tension, metabolic stress and muscle damage.

Most evidence suggests training across a range of rep ranges (3–20 reps) is optimal for building both strength and size simultaneously — which is why this generator uses a mixed approach regardless of goal.

Frequently asked questions

A full body training program 2–3 times per week is best for beginners. It trains every muscle group frequently, teaches the fundamental movement patterns and produces fast results. The most important thing is consistency.
PPL (Push/Pull/Legs) splits training into three days: push movements (chest, shoulders, triceps), pull movements (back, biceps) and legs. It is the most popular program structure for intermediate lifters and allows each muscle group to be trained twice per week.
For beginners, 2–3 days is sufficient. For intermediates, 3–5 days is optimal. For advanced lifters, 4–6 days per week allows sufficient volume. More is not always better — recovery is just as important as training.
Yes. Progressive overload is the foundation of all training progress. Systematically increase weight, reps or sets over time. The Tsemppi app does this automatically based on your logged performance.
RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) is a scale from 1–10 indicating how hard a set feels. RPE 8 means you could do 2 more reps. RPE 10 is an all-out max effort. Training at RPE 7–8 is optimal for most sets — hard enough to stimulate growth, not so hard that recovery is compromised.
