How long should a workout be?

The optimal workout duration depends on your goal, training split and rest times. For most people, 45–75 minutes covers a complete, effective session. Beyond 90 minutes, fatigue accumulates and performance drops — making additional volume less productive.

Rest times account for a large portion of total workout time and vary significantly by goal. Strength training with heavy compound lifts requires 3–5 minutes of rest per set. Hypertrophy work needs 60–120 seconds. Shorter rest times compress the workout but require reducing weight to maintain rep quality.

Frequently asked questions

Research suggests 45–75 minutes is the optimal workout duration. Longer sessions do not produce significantly more benefit, and cortisol levels begin to rise, potentially impairing recovery.
For strength training, 3–5 minutes. For hypertrophy, 1–2 minutes. For endurance, 30–60 seconds. Compound movements like squats and deadlifts require longer rest than isolation exercises.
Always. A 5–10 minute general warm-up plus movement-specific warm-up sets is the minimum. It reduces injury risk and improves performance on working sets.
Reduce rest times, use supersets (alternating two exercises back-to-back), cut isolation exercises and focus on compound movements. Each of these can save 10–20 minutes without reducing stimulus.
More frequently. Research consistently shows that spreading the same weekly volume across more sessions (higher frequency) produces better results than fewer, longer sessions. Two 45-minute sessions beat one 90-minute session.
