What are Wilks and DOTS scores?

Powerlifting scores like Wilks and DOTS solve a fundamental problem in strength sports: how do you compare lifters of different body weights? A 60kg lifter who totals 400kg and a 120kg lifter who totals 600kg are both impressive — but who is stronger pound-for-pound?

Both formulas apply a mathematical correction factor based on bodyweight to produce a normalized score. Higher scores indicate better strength relative to bodyweight, allowing fair comparison across all weight classes.

The Wilks formula was developed by Robert Wilks and has been used in powerlifting since the 1990s. The DOTS formula was developed more recently and is now the official scoring system of the IPF. Both remain widely used in the community.

Frequently asked questions

The Wilks score allows powerlifters to be compared across different weight classes. It normalizes the weight lifted relative to bodyweight using a mathematical formula, making it possible to determine who is the strongest pound-for-pound.
DOTS (Dynamic Objective Team Scoring) is a newer scoring system that is more accurate, particularly at lighter and heavier weight classes. The IPF (International Powerlifting Federation) currently uses DOTS scoring in competition.
DOTS is newer and widely considered more accurate. Wilks is better known and still widely used in the community. Our calculator shows both scores so you can compare them side by side.
The total is the combined result of your best squat, bench press and deadlift in a competition. You can also use this calculator for a single lift by entering only that lift's weight.
For men, a Wilks score above 300 is considered intermediate, above 400 is advanced and above 450 is elite. For women, above 225 is intermediate, above 300 is advanced and above 375 is elite. World-class lifters typically score above 500 (men) or 425 (women).
