What are Wilks and DOTS scores?
Powerlifting scores like Wilks and DOTS solve a fundamental problem in strength sports: how do you compare lifters of different body weights? A 60kg lifter who totals 400kg and a 120kg lifter who totals 600kg are both impressive — but who is stronger pound-for-pound?
Both formulas apply a mathematical correction factor based on bodyweight to produce a normalized score. Higher scores indicate better strength relative to bodyweight, allowing fair comparison across all weight classes.
The Wilks formula was developed by Robert Wilks and has been used in powerlifting since the 1990s. The DOTS formula was developed more recently and is now the official scoring system of the IPF. Both remain widely used in the community.
